VLC.ONL Editorial Policy and Review Standards
Every indexed page must answer a distinct user need, show its limits, cite the best available source, and pass title/H1, link, safety, evidence and originality checks.
How a page passes review
Publication requires evidence, a distinct purpose, accurate links, visible limitations, and a correction path. Automated checks are disclosed and never presented as human testing or expert review.
Primary sources come first
Version numbers, product capabilities and menu behavior are checked against VideoLAN release directories, documentation or source-controlled project material where possible. The VLC download hub therefore sends users to official sources, while the VLC.ONL entity and independence statement explains who publishes these guides.
Experience is never invented
We do not fabricate tests, measurements, credentials, quotes or reviewer identities. A page says “documented” when that is the actual basis.
Every page needs one useful purpose
Pages are not produced by swapping keywords. A new page needs a separate workflow, decision, compatibility issue or evidence set.
Automation must pass quality gates
The Docs Library importer verifies domain identity, sanitizes HTML, removes duplicate H1 elements, and spaces publication by three days. It also requires a primary VLC citation, two contextual internal links, useful sections, a list or table, and a comparison against published and incoming pages. Failed imports stay out of discovery. These gates are documented in the Google spam policy safeguards.
Automation is disclosed
An eligible imported article explains how it entered the site and what automated checks were applied. VLC.ONL remains responsible for the page, but does not describe an automated check as human testing, first-hand experience or expert approval.
Anchor text must name the destination
Only the article title is the primary card link. Descriptive copy is not silently folded into the anchor text, and destination labels describe the actual page.
Corrections remain visible
Substantive edits update review information. Obsolete legacy pages redirect to the closest maintained answer instead of masquerading as current guidance. Readers can report an outdated VLC instruction with the affected version and platform.
